I recently had the pleasure of building an EICO HF81 from a stripped bare (dare I say nekkid?) repainted '81 chassis: The customer supplied most of the parts (but I could have just as easily): a new Heyboer drop-in replacement for the original undersized power tranny, Russian 6π14 tubes, new-manufacture Tung-Sol 12AX7s, Belton sockets, oil filter caps and Russian paper-in-oil and WIMA MKP caps for coupling. He also wanted a single-point ground, a simplified phono input (Nicotera mod), an IEC inlet and new input jacks on a thick aluminum plate. I always spend significant time with every customer to determine exactly what they want, and this one was no exception. Once we had everything specified, it was time to begin. This is what I started with: Look at all that undeveloped real estate! "I like the wide open spaces..." Too bad it can't stay this way. (more)
